Ernst, a motherless child, is a bright boy but also a misfit. Juvenile homes and correctional institutions in which he has lived so far believe that it is «impossible to instruct». Due to his rebellious nature, he is finally sent to a psychiatric ward where he notices that other children are being killed under the supervision of sr. Veithausen. By helping other patients and planning the escape together with Nandla, his first love, Ernst defies the management of the clinic that decides whether children should live or die.
