Artistic advisor Dina Pokrajac singled out the following films for the upcoming 18th Festival of Tolerance.

The Norwegian feature film Loveable, which will be screened at the opening, is a three-time winner at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. This is one of the films that visitors will be able to see free of charge at Two Palaces in the historic centre of Zadar. The film’s director, Lilje Ingolfsdottir, aims to highlight the challenges of juggling parenthood, marriage and a demanding career, as well as the fear associated with being abandoned after a divorce.

Oscar winner Adam Elliot’s animated tragicomic film Memoir of a Snail made its debut at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in June this year. The film’s plot centres on the lives of twins who, after losing their parents wind up in foster homes hundreds of miles apart. Nick Cave, Eric Bana and Jackie Weaver are among the actors who lend their voices to the characters. While the boy is sent to live with a family of religious fundamentalists in Western Australia, the girl moves in with a swinger couple. Among the suggestions, Todd Haynes’s May December is highly recommended. It features two brilliant performances by Oscar winners Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore.

My Favourite Cake, an award-winning film about a 70-year-old Iranian woman called Mahin who has been living alone since her husband passed away and her daughter has moved from Tehran to Europe, is an audience favourite at many festivals. When her friends encourage her to break her years-long single routine, she embarks on a new and unexpected romance.

The Oscar-nominated film Sugarcane is a documentary fan favourite. The film tells the story of the resilience of Native people and their way of life in the midst of an international conflict. The film provides participants with the tools to disrupt intergenerational trauma cycles by bearing witness to painful, long-ignored truths.

The selection of this year’s film program has been curated by Snježana Tribuson and Boško Picula.
